I am greatly honored and pleased to be recognized for Contributions to Chinese Studies. I feel that any small contribution I have made is due entirely to the great Chinese scholars, pasat and present, whose works I have studied. The kindness of Chinese scholars such as your committee is an important link between China and her foreign friends. Even though I do not feel worthy of such an award, I will always remember that our study of China brings the achievements of your great civilization to the attention of people all over the world. If I have contributed in any small way to an understanding of China, I shall feel that my life’s work has been useful.
Please convey my gratitude to your colleagues and assure them that I feel greatly encouraged by your kindness, however little I may deserve it.
