A teacher in Northeast China has repeatedly smashed a second grader's head against a wall causing severe head injury to the student, as a punishment for speaking in class, reports the website of the People's Daily on Sunday.
The seven-year-old primary school student Xiao Dan was speaking to her classmate during a Chinese language lesson, when the angry teacher pulled her by the hair and started to beat her. Thereafter the teacher repeatedly smashed her head against the classroom wall. This brutal incident happened on November 14 at the No 1. Primary School in Diaobingshan city in Northeast China's Liaoning province.
After that the child suffered from a severe headache and nausea but was too afraid to complain against the teacher to the school authorities. She was sent to hospital the day after, when her parents learnt about the incident.
Doctors at the Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University say that Xiao Dan has suffered traumatic head injury with internal bleeding; 165 ml of blood was discharged from the lumps on her head caused by a hematoma, which refers to bleeding between the skull and the cerebral cortex.
Doctors fear that the injuries may have a long-term impact on the child's intellectual development.
The teacher was suspended and the school has agreed to pay 60,000 yuan (9,800 USD) as compensation, but the sum is not even enough to cover Xiao Dan's medical treatment.
Li Zongsheng, a Liaoning-based lawyer, was quoted in the report as saying that teachers should refrain from corporal punishment as per the law. He added that teachers' criminal responsibility shall be investigated as per to the law, if they abuse students.
