Cinema debuts on S. China Sea island
SANSHA - More than 200 residents and soldiers on Yongxing Island watched the Chinese movie The Eternity of Jiao Yulu on Saturday, marking the opening of China's southernmost cinema.
Located in Sansha, the country's newest city in the South China Sea, Sansha Yinlong Cinema offers the latest blockbusters.
"The cinema will show at least one film a day, so residents and soldiers on Yongxing Island can enjoy films at the same time as moviegoers nationwide," said Gu Xiaojing, general manager of Hainan Media Group, the parent of Hainan Film Co, which operates the theater.
Chen Zijian, general manager of Hainan Film Co, said the cinema is equipped with advanced projection equipment as well as a 3-D screen.
The company has also purchased two mobile projection units and plans to screen films for free on other islands in Sansha to meet the demands of residents, he added.
The cinema is part of a plan by the local cultural authorities to establish community services on Sansha's islands.
In April last year, the city opened its first public library. It also has a stadium and has organized various cultural activities.
China set up Sansha in 2012. The city government is located on Yongxing Island, the largest of the Xisha Islands.
