In 2000, the Nobel Literature Prize Chinese Writers Nomination Committee in the US selected Ba Jin to compete for the 2001 Nobel Prize. A letter from the Committee lauded Ba Jin as the most outstanding writer and thinker in modern China, his work of nearly half a century have established him as a writer of high prestige and respect in world culture circles, but the writer rejected the nomination.
