A teacher of aerobics from Hunan First Normal University has created a dance adapted from the gymnastics of Chairman Mao Zedong, rednet.cn reported on Monday.
Shan Shun, the teacher, developed the dance after she saw a number of disputes caused by square dancing in recent years. She adapted the gymnastics created by Mao (1893-1976), the founder of the People's Republic of China, when he studied at the university from 1913 to 1918.
The dance created by Shan features boxing and jumping so the dancers can exercise their hands, feet, heads and torsos to slow and deliberate music played by Chinese instruments, in an attempt to make less noise and not annoy local residents.
