A group of teachers from Jiangxi Normal University, Central China’s Jiangxi province, presented a concert in the University of Lagos, Nigeria on Jan 15.
During the event, JXNU teachers performed a variety of classical Chinese songs including “the Butterfly Lovers” and “Banjiudiao”, a popular folk ditty in south Jiangxi.
The performance combined Chinese culture and African drums, bringing local elements in union with foreign traditions.
Voluntary teachers of the Confucius Institute of the University of Lagos also offered a performance with the faculty of the university’s Chinese-language department.
They combined Chinese martial arts and tai chi, which were met with lots of applause, laughter and cheers.
After the concert, performers sent their instruments to the Confucius Institute as gifts, and were presented paintings created by art stduents of the University of Lagos in return.
The concert was initiated by Hanban, or the Confucius Institute headquarters, and organized by JXNU and the University of Lagos.
Xiao Zhongmin, head of JXNU’s international cooperation and exchange office, and Wang Yongjing, the Chinese president of the Confucius Institute, were present at the event.
The event was also attended by students of primary, middle schools and universities, and overseas Chinese.
