China sees Asean-China, Asean+3 summits as significant

China regards the upcoming Asean-China and Asean 3 summits here as
significant meetings, and will put forward its "principled propositions and
related suggestions" to enhance bilateral and regional co-operation, according
to a Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry official.
Cui Tiankai, Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs in the
ministry, said Prime Minister Wen Jiabao would deliver "important" speeches at
the summits.
He said that as next year marked the 15th anniversary of the establishment of
the Asean-China dialogue partnership, this year's Asean-China Summit would be of
great significance in that "it bridges the past and the future".
"China will fully affirm the achievements and experience that have been
scored over the past 15 years since China and Asean established the dialogue,"
he added.
"He (Wen) would explain China's views on the future direction of bilateral
relations and work out specific initiatives to deepen co-operation," he said
when briefing reporters in Beijing on Wen's upcoming attendance at the summits
and subsequent official visit to Malaysia.
Cui said China would also propose enhanced bilateral cooperation on measures
to tackle bird flu and other newly emerging epidemics which he felt represented
severe challenges for both China and Asean.
