Seven Chinese movies to enter Cannes race in May

China Film Group has selected six Chinese movies for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival that is due to show up in mid May. The candidate Chinese movies include "The Knot", "Tokyo Trial" ,"Love in The City" and three others.

May 16, this year marks the 60th anniversary of Cannes Film Festival, which is expected to boast a more star-studded lineup and film competitors.

The high-profile Chinese actor-turned-director Jiang Wen's latest movie "The Sun Still Rises" will also enter the Cannes' race as an individual applicant via Hong Kong's Emperor Group. The movie has already garnered an official pass from China's film authority to screen in cinemas. The director is now on busy post-production in France.

A senior manager from China's Film Promotion International told Shanghai Youth Daily that the six officially recommended movies are good both in terms of box office takings and reputation. They should represent the quality of contemporary Chinese movies.

Organizer of the Cannes Film Festival has released its first batch of guest lists which will include Chinese star actress Gong Li.

Moreover, Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's first English language movie "My Blueberry Night" is expected to be the opening film at the festival.

The documentary "A Great Master Recaptured" about Chinese opera master Mei Lanfang will also be screened during film festival, along with other Chinese movies.

China's Film Promotion International will put up a big exhibition at the film festival to promote Chinese movies. Some 50 bosses of China's film companies will also be along to get a chance in meeting their overseas buyers.
