Nanning: Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has spent 3.3 billion yuan ($483 million) over the last two years to help students living in poverty, Xinhua reported.
This includes the tuition subsidies of 218 million yuan ($31million) and the national loans of 790 million yuan ($115 million) to roughly 78,000 college students.
About 32 percent of college students in Guangxi can enjoy various scholarships offered by the state, the autonomous regions and Guangzhou. A total scholarship of 700 million yuan ($102 million) have been provided to college students since 2007.
Secondary vocational school stipends have also increased. Some 90 percent, or roughly 600,000 students in Guangxi, now receive an annual subsidy of 1,500 yuan ($219) for their first two years of vocational school.
Regular high schools in Guangxi have also spent 36 million yuan ($5.2 million) in subsidies for 36,000 poor students, who now receive an annual stipend of 1000 yuan ($146).
