Song Yige paintings

Multitudes of contradictions are abound in this selection of paintings by artist Song Yige.

Her talent in painting and her method of expression is striking to most viewers. The inspiration for her works come from the details of nature and life and a deep understanding of how people handle emotions, relationships and their pasts. The theme of natural human relations underpins her work.

For the artist, painting is a sort of expressive muttering, mumbling to herself in pigment, in constant conversation with the canvas. She rebuilds the images in her mind by pushing paint, catching one quick moment of peace, an instant of quietness.

With her pencil, she describes life from an unexpected angle, building up a theme of hyper-reality in which the reality of space becomes meaningless. The metaphor appears and emotions are released.

Song's great talent is that she can imprint feelings and emotions directly onto the canvas: anxiety, attraction, gloom, isolation; these complex and layered emotions can be transformed into a multi-dimensional language in paint.

Until Dec 16. ARTMIA Foundation, 261 Caochangdi, Airport Service Road, Chaoyang district, 8457-4550/ 136-2130-0131.

Rong Rong and Inri

The Three Shadows Photography Art Center was established three years ago.

Its founders, Rong Rong and Inri, have been collaborating for about 10 years and this exhibition aims to celebrate this collaboration.

Rong Rong and Inri met in 1999, using images as a go-between; it was love at first sight. Before this, they had been independent photographers, each having created significant bodies of work.

Rong Rong's extended photographic record of artists living at Beijing's East Village (1993-1998) has become an important archival resource for the study of Chinese contemporary art and photograph.

Until Oct 30, 10 am-6 pm, Three Shadows Photography Art Center, 155A Caochangdi, 6432-2663.

Swedish fashion

Created by the Swedish Institute, this exhibition shows the work of a new generation of fashion designers from Sweden.

This generation is characterized by a more individualistic and artistic approach to fashion. The exhibition presents the Swedish fashion scene in the form of products (actual garments on mannequins) and context (photographs, films and texts).

Great emphasis is placed on the interaction between context and garment, both communicatively and pertaining to scenography, making a strong and uniquely individual visual impression for visitors.

Free guided tours are available every Saturday at 2 pm.

Until Nov 7, 10 am-6 pm. B07, 798 Art Zone, 2 Jiuxianqiao Road, Chaoyang district, 6438-6903.
