Artistic chronology
Guo Shifu, born in Beijing in March 1945, starts learning bird-and-flower painting in his early years.
1963 - Guo studies painting in the painting pavilion of the Palace Museum.
1964 - He takes a job working in fields that provide a theatrical scenery setting for a Beijing opera troupe.
1979 - Guo founds Baihua Painting Association and holds his first painting exhibition of the association in the Beijing Working People's Culture Palace.
1981 - Guo founds the Beijing Bird-and-Flower Seminar Workshop.
1986 - Guo holds a solo painting exhibition in the National Art Museum of China, and a Chinese vice-premier sends a message of congratulation.
1988 - Guo's works are frequently displayed at exhibitions held in Beihai Park and the National Art Museum of China.
1990 - Guo participates in the first Chinese painting exhibition held in Hong Kong.
1997 - Guo publishes a collection of bird-and-flower paintings.
1999 - Guo's freehand-style bird-and-flower paintings are exhibited in Southeast Asia and several major cities in the United States, including San Francisco and New York City.
2002 - Guo's works are shown during the art exhibition of the Beijing Fine Art Academy.
2003 - His works are exhibited during the 2003 Chinese painting exhibition.
2005 - Guo's works are shown during the art exhibition of Chinese contemporary bird-and-flower paintings held by the Chinese National Academy of Arts and the National Art Museum of China.
2007 - Guo hosts a solo painting exhibition in Shanxi province.
2008 - Guo is invited to the Chinese contemporary painting exhibition jointly held by the China National Academy of Painting, China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing Fine Art Academy and Academy of Art and Design of Tsinghua University.
2009 - Guo's works are exhibited during the sixth China-Japan art exchanges exhibition and the art exhibition in memory of Mao Zedong's birth.
