"When talking about cancer, many people feel terror and fear. But about one third of cancer can be detected in the early stages and also be cured with immediate efforts," says Pan Changqing, vice-president of Shanghai No 1 People's Hospital.

"Early detection, early diagnosis and early treatment are the key for improving the survival rate," Pan says during a free screening activity in Shanghai.

The breast cancer screening campaign, sponsored by GE Healthcare, aims to enhance public awareness on breast cancer and the importance of early detection.

More than 200 women in the city received free screening during the event.

Similar campaigns were also held in Beijing, Fuzhou in Fu - jian province and Guangzhou in Guangdong province, where some 1,600 women received free screening.

Changing lifestyles, such as fast pace of life, high work pressure and having fewer children, are high risk factors, according to Guo Qiyong, an expert from the Chinese Medical Doctor Association.

"Regular body checkups and mood management are two measures to ensure breast health," Guo says.

Women should not rely merely on self-examination. Instead, they should go for regular body checks, Guo notes.

"Breast self-examination is usually promoted at health promotion events, and is regarded as a good way to improve women's awareness on breast cancer. But it is not an effective method," he says.
