An expressway linking the western part of Sichuan province and Lugu Lake, a popular tourist attraction in Yunnan, will start construction at the end of 2015, Xinhuanet reported.
The 176-km-long expressway, called Xichang–Shangri-La Expressway, is expected to open to traffic in 2020, cutting down the travel time between Xichang and Lugu Lake to about two hours.
The expressway will have four lanes in both directions and is designed for speeds up to 80 km per hour.
Upon the completion of the new expressway, people in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, will be able to drive to Lugu Lake via Chengdu–Ya’an Expressway, Ya’an–Xichang Expressway and then Xichang–Shangri-La Expressway. The whole journey will take only about seven hours.
