The Ethnic Minority Groups Development Research Institute, affiliated with the Development Research Center of the State Council (DRC), mainly studies economic and social development issues in regions with large ethnic groups. It also follows closely international, regional and religious conflicts. It undertakes research on ethnic and religious issues in China and the world as a whole.

The institute focuses on contemporary issues, without neglecting historical ones. It pays special attention to social investigation, strategies and policies.

The institute has invited many experts to lead its research team and act as academic consultants. It also hosts academic seminars on national and religious issues. It has participated in many domestic and international academic conferences and has hosted communication activities with relevant organizations at home and abroad.

The institute has set up communication and cooperation relationships with many academic organs regarding national and religious issues in many countries and regions. The institute has its own series of publications relevant to ethnic groups and religious issues.
