Analysis on energy market in China in the first quarter of 2004

By Deng Yusong

Date: 2004/05/19

Abstract:

Both energy production and consumption maintained rapid growth in the first quarter of 2004. In some areas, the supply of electricity was still short of demand; in coal market weak supply faced an excessive demand, and price rising was overwhelming. Demand drive is the cause of the rising coal price whereas higher cost is the main cause pushing up electricity price. Domestic petroleum price is strongly impacted by international market. In the second quarter, supply and demand of energy will keep a high speed growth. It is predicted that electricity generation will grow by 15.5 percent year-on-year and the supply and demand in the coal market will be improved; supply and demand balance in the petroleum market is expected. The energy prices will be fluctuating at a high level.
