Asssistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator and Director Crisis Response Unit, United Nations Development Program
Izumi Nakamitsu was appointed Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, Assistant Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Director of the Crisis Response Unit (CRU) in September 2014.
Ms. Nakamitsu has many years of distinguished service within and outside the United Nations System. She most recently served as Director of the Asia and the Middle East Division in the UN’s Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO). Between 2008 and 2012, she was Director of the Division of Policy, Evaluation and Training in DPKO.
Between 2005 and 2008, she was Professor of International Relations at Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo, and during the same period she also served as a member of the Foreign Exchange Council of the Japanese Foreign Minister, and as a visiting senior advisor on peace- building at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
