Research Report No. 81, 2017 (Total. 5156) 2017-7-25

Abstract: 2016 is the first year of the 13th Five-Year Plan and also the year for deepening the comprehensive reform of education. In this year, the reform of the supply-side educational reform had been vigorously promoted, and a series of guidelines and policy initiatives had been introduced. Telephone survey results show that the urban and rural residents are generally satisfied with the educational performance, and their overall evaluation of education quality has steadily improved. Influenced by various factors, the current comprehensive reform of education is facing the pressure of consolidating existing achievements and addressing some new challenges. Although remarkable achievements have been made in the reform and development of education in the past year, there are still some problems to be resolved. Household questionnaire survey results reveal that there are some defects in different grades of education that people are not satisfied with and children's education takes up the lion’s share of household consumption. Besides, there are cases relating to school dropout in the stage of compulsory education and children failing to enter nearby schools for basic education. In this regard, we need to deepen the reform in related areas, make efforts to solve the issues of public concern, take positive measures to lighten the pressure of educational spending for children in low-income families, and flesh out relevant policies and measures to effectively solve the problem of school dropout in the stage of compulsory education.
