Abstract: The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is one of the major centers relating to global steel industry, and the region’s steel industry has contributed greatly to local economic and social development. As China's economy is transforming toward high-quality development, and experiencing supply-side structural reform and coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, the development of the iron and steel industry in this region is facing three major challenges. First, the challenge between the country’s effort to improve air quality and the enhancement of steel production capacity in the region; second, the challenge of reducing overcapacity in a large scale; third, the challenge of disposing a large number of urban steel factories. In order to fundamentally deal with these challenges, we need to take measures in light of the industrial development trend, actively change the development orientation of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region’s iron and steel industry and transform the region’s iron and steel industry into one of the global iron and steel centers at the high end. In view of the current industrial performance that the iron and steel industry in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region is weak in capacity with surplus production, we need to take a step-by-step strategy to build the industry into a strong one in the world, give priority to the strategic options of iron and steel enterprises in the region through restructuring, integration, optimization and adjustment followed by innovation and upgrading. By so doing could we promote the overall strength of the regional iron and steel industry based on large and super-large iron and steel enterprise groups with comprehensive advantages.
