Chinese state councilor Liu Yandong sent a congratulatory letter to Nankai University for its 90th birthday on Sep 17.
In her letter Liu said Nankai has produced a great number of outstanding revolutionists, scientists and talents in various fields in its history and has become an important base in recent years for producing high-level talents and creating high tech innovations.
Liu also said she hoped the university will carry forward its glorious tradition and make more achievements on scientific research and innovations, as well as strive to be a world famous university.
Nankai University, founded in 1919 in Tianjin by the famous patriotic educators Zhang Boling and Yan Xiu, is among the most famous universities in China. The public university has a list of prominent alumni including late Premier Zhou Enlai, Dr Shiing-shen Chern, Dr Ta-you Wu and playwright Cao Yu.
Guests attending the Nankai anniversary celebrations included ranking officials with Tianjin municipality such as Tianjin party chief Zhang Gaoli, Tianjin mayor Huang Guoxing and hundreds of the university’s alumni.
Presidents of Peking University, Tsinghua University, Hong Kong University, Tokyo University, Waseda University and tens of others also took part in the celebrations.
