The recent smoggy weather in Xiamen has led to a surge in the sale of environmental products in the city, such as dust masks, air cleaners and green plants.

Air cleaners have become a hot seller in Xiamen markets. As the city was covered in haze and smog, more and more people bought air cleaners to wipe out PM2.5 particles in the air.

According to an employee in a household appliance market near the Lianhua intersection, since the beginning of the recent haze and smog, sales of air cleaning machines surged over 10 times compared with the first ten months of 2013.

Xiamen also saw a sales boom of dust masks and green plants. Although the Xiamen Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center said the air was just “slightly polluted” in most parts of Xiamen Island, many people chose to wear masks to ensure healthier breathing.

Moreover, snow pears, grapefruits, black fungus, carrots and green plants also gained popularity because of their dust-absorbing function.
