Most roads in the downtown area were jammed up on the morning of Monday Dec 1. At some of the worst sections, vehicles managed to crawl for less than a kilometer over half an hour.

The congestion was caused by a barrage of reasons such as roads being closed for maintenance or construction projects, glitches hitting signal lights and more cars taking to the road during rainy days, not to mention that Monday morning is always a time for traffic peaks, said police.

The heavy traffic dampened travelers' moods, and resulted in an avalanche of complaints.

Mr Zhang told Fuzhou Evening News that he spent one and a half hours on the way to work, triple his normal time, and he was stuck on 2km of Fufei Road for about 35 minutes.

"Let me tell you a simple sad story. It is Monday, and it is jammed on the road," an internet user wrote on Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging service in China.

Another blogger said it took 30 minutes for a bus to “move its ass” between bus stops. And his dream for a full-attendance bonus was shattered again on the first day of the month.
