Data released by the Xiamen Statistics Bureau showed the permanent population in Xiamen has reached 3.81 million by the end of 2014, 80,000 more than in 2013.
With a population density of about 14,097 persons per square kilometer, the population density of Xiamen Island (Huli District and Siming District) has now surpassed the famously populous Hong Kong and Singapore.
Xiamen Island occupied 52.2% of the total population.
The permanent population in Huli District and Siming District was 1.006 million and 0.983 million respectively, with population density’s of 15,293 and 13,052 persons per square kilometer, respectively.
In terms of outlying districts, Jimei District took the lead with a permanent population of 0.633 million, followed by Tong’an District with 0.536 million, Xiang’an District with 0.327 million and Haicang District with 0.325 million.
The population density of Haicang District is 1,872 persons per square kilometer, which is only one eighth of Huli District.
Professor Dongliang Zhu suggested policy-guided population migration to relieve the population pressure on Xiamen Island, which is apparently overloaded in terms of public resources and livability.
