Fujian nominates 10 role models

Tian Yunchao, 35, bus driver

The ordinary bus driver in Fuzhou rose to fame after he successfully stopped a runaway bus on Feb 10, 2014.

The No.6 bus in front of Tian's No.901 lost control after its driver unexpectedly fell into a coma. Tian then began to chase it – first by foot then by car. After six minutes and more than two kilometers, he managed to leap into the bus and steered it to safety.

Tian played down his heroics, saying it was an instinctive reaction.

"I am a bus driver. I was supposed to do that because I know how to operate a bus."

Policewomen at Fuzhou Airport

Greatness is often conceived in simplicity. And the women inspectors at Fuzhou Airport are some of the best examples.

The team of police officers have conducted nearly 1.3 million inspections of more than 16,000 flights, uncovering some 260 smuggling cases since 2000.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, then governor of Fujian province in 2001, dubbed them "police flowers at the nations' gateway".

Chen Guoxi, 100, surgeon

The centenarian who loves reading English novels is a living legend in Fujian medicine.

In 1956 Chen stunned the nation with an operation which successfully reattached a severed arm to a man who lost it at a work accident.

Chen was also a trailblazer in surgeries of the liver, pancreas and kidney, with an astonishing rate of zero deaths on the operating table, deemed as a miracle in his generation.

After retirement, Chen wrote a series of medical works which are still used as textbooks at many medical colleges.

Liu Shan

Previously a radio host in Fuzhou, Liu is now studying psychology at Taiwan's Fu Jen University, where her son studied before he ended his life (after experiencing emotional troubles).

After noticing that an increasing number of mainland students are struggling with life and study in Taiwan, Liu decided to become their guardian angel. She rented an apartment near the university and invited mainland students to come over and help them deal with their troubles.

Local media have given a lot of credit to her kindness, saying she has brought love and hope to the public.
