The 11th Youth Robot Competition was held in Fuzhou, capital city of China's Fujian province, on March 31, attracting a total of 229 teams and up to over 500 competitors from over 90 schools.

The competition, co-organized by the Fuzhou science and technology association and Fuzhou education bureau, is divided into five categories with different subjects.

Zheng Xinping, a sixth-grade student from Wushan Primary School, showed her creative trash cans, which she designed together with her partner Tang Jiawei.

According to Zheng, the trash cans are equipped with ultrasonic sensors that can judge the category of the garbage and set out matching voice prompts so that the corresponding trash can automatically open.

Zheng went on saying that the creative design helps to avoid direct touch on the garbage can lid.

Wang Ruoming, another participant, said her design focused on the issue of water resources.

The robot can identify the purity of water through infrared sensors and automatically deal with sewage, she said, adding that her creative design aims to help alleviate the current situation of water shortage.

The competition will select 24 winning teams to attend the following Fujian provincial Youth Robot Competition in May.
