Xiamen plans to invest 1 billion yuan on its cruise ship home port project in the Dongdu area. The city is currently upgrading its four cruise berths at the cruise terminal to accommodate cruise ships as large as 220,000 tons-class.
The cruise ship home port project will cover an area of 47.1 hectares, reaching out to Haicang Bridge in the north, Yundang Lake in the south, the Dongdu Wharf coastline in the west and Dongdu Road in the east. The first phase of the project includes four cruise berths at the cruise terminal - a Passenger Joint Inspection Building, a hotel cluster, an entertainment centre, a business centre and a cruise service centre.
The cruise ship home port project is a key part of the Xiamen Southeast International Shipping Centre which aims to turn the city into a global shipping hub and boost the city's shipping, logistics and tourism industries.
Xiamen port is one of the largest ports in Fujian. The coastal province used to have 6 ports, but in recent years, the provincial transportation department have combined them into 3 major port groups - Xiamen, Fuzhou and Meizhou Bay. Each of them will have different, but more specialized orientations.
The port of Xiamen aims to be a Southeast International Shipping Center with a world-class cruise ship home port. Fuzhou port will focus on bulk cargo distribution while Meizhou Bay will become the largest coal reserve and mining transportation port in the Southeast region.
