Tourism in Pingtan peaked in July, an island city off eastern Fujian province, according to authorities, ptnet.cn reported.

The number of tourists increased by 40 percent compared with the same period in last year.

The Deity’s Well tallied about 20,600 visitors in July. The Shipaiyang scenic resort and the General’s Mountain saw about 10,600 and 9,600 tourists, respectively.

The majority of tourists were from neighboring provinces like Jingxi and Zhejiang. They usually come with families, said Chen Youyu, a manager with a local travel agency.

Chen added that his company’s business climbed about 20 to 30 percent in July from previous months. It took in as many as 2,000 tourists on weekends.
