Housing rent in Xiamen was ranked eighth among cities in China in August, according to a report released by the Chinese Real Estate Market Data Center.
The top 10 Chinese cities with the highest rents in August were: Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Lingshui, Sanya, Xiamen, Nanjing and Fuzhou.
Beijing topped all of Chinese cities with 66.8 yuan per month per square meter, up 4.26 percent compared to last August. Shenzhen saw a year-on-year rent rise of 22.79 percent in August.
The average rent in Xiamen stood at 37.53 yuan per month per square meter in August, down 2.07 percent compared to last August. Fuzhou was ranked tenth with 33.10 yuan per month per square meter, and Quanzhou 34th at 23.85 yuan per month per square meter.
According to reports, small apartments with one or two rooms are still very popular among tenants.
"The best time to rent a house in Xiamen is at the end of each year, when the housing supply jumps, a time when it's also easier for lodgers to make satisfactory bargains with landlords," a property manager in Xiamen said.
