Quarantine authorities in Pingtan county recently confiscated a total of 130 kilograms of mango pulp carried by inbound travelers.

The mango pulp was found in 10 boxes that were transported by the Haixia, a ferry regularly sailing between Pingtan and Taichung in Taiwan.

An official from the Pingtan Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, said that the pulp – even though it seemed to be freshly cut into small slices - did not undergo deep processing such as curing and thermal sterilization, and thus the possible presence of biohazards could not be ruled out, and he also said that the mango pulp was destroyed due to safety concerns.

The bureau added that Taiwan passengers must comply with the rules of the Chinese mainland quarantine authorities so as to avoid any unnecessary losses.

Officials said that substandard sausages are the most common products carried by Taiwan compatriots that are intercepted by Pingtan's quarantine department.

Statistics show that, in the first half of the year, the Haixia made 216 round trips, carrying 60,431 passengers, which marks a 16.1 percent year on year increase.

As the Haixia helped boost cross-Straits communications, the quarantine department witnessed an increase in the number of cases involving hygiene and sanitation issues.

In the first half of the year, the department found two H1N1 cases, while there were no cases in the previous year. It has also prevented 454 batches of illegal goods and 12 types of pests from entering the Chinese mainland, an increase of 123.63 percent and 9.8 percent, respectively.
