Residents of Pingtan, Fujian province now have the opportunity to enjoy free WiFi service "i-Pingtan" at ten areas, announced officials of local economic development bureau on March 8.
The ten areas are Haiyu Plaza, Customs office areas, Planning Museum, Haitan Ancient City, Cuiyuan Park, Taiwan Innovation Park, Aoqian High-Speed Passenger Terminal, bus station, Taiwan Town and local administrative service center.
The above areas have been included in the first stage of the free WiFi project. The project is considered a significant move to turn Pingtan into a smart city, said Chen Hua, an official of the economic development bureau.
Chen explained that the project aims to meet local residents' increasing need for information services, which also give tourists a lot of convenience.
Some citizens said that they are pleased about this new service, which is quite convenient and helps lower their data costs.
Local officials said that they continue to promote the service in tourist sites, hospitals, cultural and sports venues and office areas. They set up a two-year goal that the service will cover the county's 200 areas by 2018.
