Pingtan Sand Sculpture Park recorded close to 10,000 visitors on its opening day on Saturday.

The opening of the park also marked the start of this year's international sand sculpture festival.

Tourists will be able to taste delicious Taiwan and Pingtan specialties, buy creative products and characteristic goods from the mainland and Taiwan, and live in sand-featured rooms during the festival.

Various activities will be held as part of the festival, including the production of a song and dance drama based on the history of Pingtan, virtual reality experiences and a sand sculpture maze.

Jiang Jingui, a tourist from the Shaowu county who visited on the day, said that he was impressed by the beauty of the park and would recommend his friends to visit.

The annual Pingtan International Sand Sculpture Festival started in 2003 to develop a cultural brand and boost the area's tourism sector.
