73-year-old Ms. Bao Qian lives in Hangzhou.
She learnt how to use the computer, drive and speak English after she retired and people all call her the modern grandma.
Bao Qian lives in the neighborhood of Dengxinxiang close to the famous West Lake in Hangzhou City. She talks with lucidity and a Hangzhou accent. If it were not for her wrinkled face revealing her age it would be difficult to imagine that she is in her seventieth year.
Hangzhou is a famous tourist city in the world and is called "Paradise on earth" for its elegant and natural environment. Bao Qian is proud of the city that she lives in: "We enjoy the beauty of Hangzhou, and we have a good reputation. I am very happy. As many foreigners and Chinese from other cities say, the people of Hangzhou are lucky. I love this city and I think I should make my part of contribution to make this city better. " At the time she retired, she believed that in addition to the most renowned West Lake, silk and Longjing tea, there are other things in Hangzhou that are worth admiring. Five years ago, she planned to visit a place or a family every day for a year, and then write an essay on about a thousand Chinese characters on the experience. She hopes that through her articles, people could know Hangzhou better.
Bao Qian titled her diary "365 days in Hangzhou”. And now this work is already published on the internet, which is well received by the internet community. Because of her passion for writing, 13 years ago, she began to learn to use computers at the age of 60 years. Through a period of arduous study, she mastered how to type Chinese characters. And she was even able to do some basic programming. She then started a free computer learning course in her community and taught the senior citizens in the neighborhood basic computer skill. Up to now, the computer course has been held for 5 sessions in three years, the maximum age of participants was 78 years, and youngest 20. At the age of 65 years, at the invitation of a nephew who works in England, Bao Qian went to London. At that time she did not know English, so it was very difficult for her to contact with the locals, and for that she felt like a deaf-mute. After returning to China, she began to study English, and now she can speak English fluently for everyday use. In Hangzhou it is rare for the elderly to drive, but Bao Qian, at the age of 69 years, has taken a bold decision --- learning to drive. A few days before her seventieth birthday, she officially received a license, becoming the only driver over the age of 70 years in Hangzhou. When she wants to make a trip, she would call a car releasing company for a car and hire a professional driver. Bao Qian would write her experiences and feelings of each driving experience and write short articles that are published on the local evening newspaper, to share with others her joy. As the oldest volunteer in the neighborhood, Ms. Bao Qian also dedicated her time to charitable activities. In addition to teaching computer skills to people in the neighborhood for free, she has also started a hot line to help others. Every Tuesday, the line is always busy. When someone in the neighborhood has some problems, for example, arguments between husband and wife, and even doors or windows broken, the residents call Ms. Bao. To honor the contribution of Bao Qian in charities, the City of Hangzhou has given her the title of outstanding volunteer for the popularization of science recently.
Bao Qian has three children, who believe their mother leads a rich and happy life. His second son Yang Meng commented, "My mom is a modern person who pays attention to the quality of life. We’re very happy to see her living such a happy life.”
