People walking by the junction of Pinghai road and Zhongshan road on December 30 may notice that a new bronze sculpture of Mr Sun Yat-sen, the foremost pioneer of Republican China, was installed in front of Nade Hotel.
Measured at 10-meter-high, the statue of Mr Sun Yat-sen was made by Zhongshan Road Public Art Creation Workshop. The members of this workshop are all teachers and students majoring in visual art, sculpture, architecture, etc, from China Art Academy in Hangzhou.
Sitting on the north-to-south axis of Hangzhou, Zhongshan road, or known as Southern Song Imperial Street, is a live museum of Hangzhou’s tradition and custom. Mr Sun’s sculpture is dedicated to honor his great contribution to the Chinese revolution.
Other theme sculptures on Southern Song Imperial Street, i.e. Southern Song dynasty famous figures, a family of four generations, etc, are also works born in this work shop. A family of four generations on the junction of Zhongshan road and Xihu Avenue is one of the most popular scenes on the street. Created based on a picture of a big family that used to live on Zhongshan road, the sculpture is comprised of 32 family members at different ages posing before a camera with big smiles on their faces. Tourists are likely to be seen posing as a family member and taking photos.
