After four years, after requests from Hangzhou citizens and business owners along the West Lake, this year's fireworks show moved back to the West Lake.
However, the highlight of this year's fireworks show was more than just being returned to the old location but also a sub-venue which was set up next to the Grand Canal, where citizens were invited to bring their own fireworks to light off.
The fireworks show was held from 19:45-20:25 on Oct 24 at a major venue located in the centre of the lake. Thousands viewed the show in parks like Autumn Moon over Calm Lake, Hupanju Teahouse, Orioles Singing in the Willows, Bai Causeway, Su Causeway and Gushan Road. Several others enjoyed the show for free from Yanggong Causeway, Nanshan Road, Hubin Road and Beishan Road.
The sub-venue was set up along the Grand Canal, where all bridges over the Canal acted as areas to set off fireworks and locals were invited to participate. A favorite way to view the spectacular sight was by taking a boat ride on the Canal.
West Lake Expo shines with variety
The West Lake Expo opening ceremony was held Oct 17 on Starlight Street in Binjiang District. Starlight Mall was used as the backdrop with a stage set up in the Central Square.
Events were held leading up to the Expo, with variety shows arranged on Oct 15 for the locals of Binjiang District, and Oct 16 for special groups like provincial or municipal labor models, soldiers, police, volunteers, and less-fortunate families, An estimated audience of 10,000 people watched the shows.
No superstars were invited to the shows, however, as the leading roles were played by local artists and entertainers. Songs hailing the 60th anniversary of the establishment of New China as well as symphonies reflecting Hangzhou as a “City of Quality Life” were performed.
Wang Guoping, Secretary of Hangzhou Municipal Committee of CPC, said prior to the Expo, "the objectives of holding the West Lake Expo is targeted as citizen-oriented, budgeted, civilized and safe. There will be no ribbon-cutting ceremony, nor exclusive reception. We shall try our best to bring the least inconvenience to citizens."
