Hangzhou tries to ease traffic burden

2010-April-16 09:24:28

Hangzhou city plans to connect 11 broken roads, ban left turns and run one-way roads in some areas to ease traffic jams.

Vehicles in the old city area have been increasing rapidly, reaching 585,000 in March this year, five times that in 2005, so heavy congestion is becoming more frequent.

"Our targets are smooth roads for vehicles and convenient transport for residents," said Huang Kunming, Party secretary for Hangzhou.

About 500,000 people living in the city's west travel to work in the south, east and north every day, which is a major cause of traffic problems.
