POWERCHINA M Dam in Sri Lanka to be completed
The main construction of Moragahakanda first reservoir hub (M Dam) in Sri Lanka, built by POWERCHINA's Sinohydro Corporation, was completed recently.
The installation and commissioning of mechanical and electrical equipment have all been completed, and the "countdown" towards power generation has officially begun.
Known as the "Three Gorges Project in Sri Lanka", the M Dam is the largest hydropower station built to date in Sri Lanka and the first hydropower station built by Sinohydro in the country.
Groundbreaking started in February 2013, closure on March 9, 2015, and the reservoir impoundment on Jan 11, 2017. By May 31, 2017 the four units of the M Dam completed debugging ahead of grid connection.
The M Dam project has become the hydropower station with the shortest construction period in Sri Lankan history.
During the construction of the M Dam, Maithripala Sirisena, president of Sri Lanka, came to the scene for inspection and guidance many times. He not only expressed his praise for M Dam to the news media, but gave high praise to the project on his personal twitter account.
Now that the M Dam project is about to be completed, President Sirisena has called on students and people from all over the country to visit the project.
Due to the constant flow of visitors every day, there are not only bus stations but also small markets popping up in the area.
In addition to M Dam, Sinohydro projects currently under construction in Sri Lanka include K Dam, South Expressway, South Pipe Network Reconstruction, and Kandy Water Supply.
