Pingyang Woodcut Print from Linfen city has a long history dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). During the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234), engravers who were taken prisoner in Bianliang, capital of the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), were taken to Pingyang (ancient name of Linfen city), which then became a center for engraving in North China.

The woodcut print is part of the Yellow River valley's culture and has been influenced by traditional Chinese opera and folk customs throughout the ages. The bold engraving style combines the precision of local opera with the free flowing artistic style of mural paintings. These elements can be seen in the subject matter as well as the lines, color, and design.

It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
