Ge Yuansheng, a master of firing color glaze artwork, inspects a piece made of waste coal cinders at his workshop in Taiyuan, in Shanxi province, on March 13. The 79-year-old is an inheritor of the renowned Su family’s colored glaze firing skills, a national intangible cultural heritage that was officially listed in 2008. Originating in the late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and prospering in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Su’s colored glaze was at one point seen everywhere on buildings in Beijing, Nanjing and across Shanxi province.
