Shanxi University's Education Science School was founded in 1929, and has since more than 1,000 graduates, and more than 5,000 undergrads and junior college students over the years. It currently has Level-1 master's degrees for pedagogy and psychology and is a national master's degree training institution, with three undergraduate majors in pedagogy, applied psychology, and preschool education, with pedagogy as a specialty for Shanxi province.

The school has a psychology laboratory with more than 100 instruments to provide conditions for teaching and research, and a piano room and dance studio and library with more than 20,000 books, over 190 newspapers, and 10,000 bound volumes of periodicals.

Over the years, the school has developed honored traditions in providing a comprehensive approach, clear direction, systematic study of the Chinese classics, solid skills, rigorous scholarship, hard study, tough training, improvement by gaining new knowledge, and the integration of theory and practice.

It has an older generation of educators and psychologists, such as Shi Guoya, Ding Yuchao, and Xin Zhihua, engaged in teaching and research and who influence the "diligence, pragmaticism, and seeking goodness and truth" atmosphere. Since 2000, the school has tried out theoretical and practical approaches to pedagogy, psychology, and management and, in the process, has developed a group of young and middle-aged scholars with specialties that have gained them wide recognition among academics and who have made "education theory" a key discipline in Shanxi.

The school gives equal weight to teaching and research, and to social services and it provides self-study services, such as exams, and has been providing teacher training for institutions of higher learning across the province for more than 20 years. In recent times, it has been training psychology counselors with a national training plan and has developed professional education projects involving experts in education, psychology, management and other fields.

It currently provides special training in classroom teaching and education philosophy, with the latest teaching and management methods, from primary to middle school to college and can help local government and education administrators with their consultation and research services in planning and decision-making, and track the school reforms at relatively disadvantaged schools.
