Yunnan New Film Project was first launched in 2005 by the Yunnan Government's
Publicity Department to commemorate the Chinese film industry's centenary.
Within China it is regarded as a landmark cultural act, providing a platform
from which the next generation of young Chinese filmmakers can explore their
creative potential and encourage the growth of a stronger domestic film
industry.
The project is led by Lola (Luo La), already well known for launching the New
Film Project for Chinese Young Directors in 2001, and is supported by ten
internationally recognized female filmmakers from the Chinese Mainland, Taiwan
and Hongkong.
From 2006 to 2007, these ten young directors will each lead the production of
one film at a different location within Yunnan province. At this stage of
China's market liberalization and increasing cultural openness, American
blockbusters are inevitably becoming more popular with Chinese audiences.
With this first project, YNFP aims to create a new avenue through which to
build support for the China's domestic film industry, maintaining it's
successful development, and a name that will be internationally recognized in
the future for high quality film production.
