Chinese champion Ke Jie to take on Google's AlphaGo

Google's artificial intelligence program AlphaGo will compete against China's best Go players at the Future of Go Summit in Wuzhen, Zhejiang province, this week. Ke Jie, 19, who last year became the youngest champion in Go history to win three world titles in one year, will take on AlphaGo in three rounds of regular games. Separately, Chinese players Gu Li and Lian Xiao will team up with AlphaGo, while Shi Yue, Mi Yuting, Tang Weixing, Chen Yaoye and Zhou Ruiyang will form the rival team. The games open on Tuesday.

Day to promote biodiversity and sustainable tourism

Looking ahead

Monday marks International Day for Biological Diversity. It is aimed at increasing understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Lectures will be held across China on this year's theme - Biodiversity and Sustainable Tourism. The UN says environmentally friendly tourism is important for economic growth.

Hobart gets Sino-Australian marine research center

A new marine research center, operated by Chinese and Australian institutions, will open in Hobart, Australia, on Monday. The Qingdao National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology partnered with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization to build the center. This year marks the 45th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-Australian diplomatic relations.

Report to explore misuse of poverty-alleviation funds

Amid a nationwide crackdown on corruption, the misuse of poverty-alleviation funds has been discovered at county levels, casting a shadow on the program. The sharp rise in corruption has been partly attributed to lax supervision. In the coming days, China Daily will publish in-depth stories on the issue.
