Society: Chongqing students lose weight for charity

Chongqing University students have won a monthlong battle against the bulge - 328 participants lost a total of 1,320 kilograms last month. Students who lost weight received cash rewards ranging from 30 yuan ($4.5) to 90 yuan per kg. The top five winners also received sports scholarships. One-third of their prize money will go to the school's volunteer programs, according to the organizers.

Biz: Forbes names ICBC the world's largest public company

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China has been crowned the largest public company in the world by Forbes Global. The ranking, published annually since 2003, was based on a composite score from equally-weighted measures of revenue, profits, assets and market value. Art: Capital exhibition reveals the beauty of glass

Glass is so integrated into our daily lives that it is easily overlooked as an art medium. Artists from home and abroad are showcasing their re-creations of glass at an exhibition, titled Danger and Beauty, at the Ici Labas gallery in Beijing. The sculptures and installations on display show bold exploration with glass, greatly enriching the medium's appearance. The exhibition also features paintings by Tony Brown, a British artist living in Beijing. He made the paintings by operating a machine. The show runs until July 30.

Books: Writers collect big prizes at Beijing ceremony

Writers from China and abroad won prizes of 1 million yuan ($147,000) each at a literary awards ceremony held in Beijing last week. The Jingdong Literature Prize went to Chinese writer Ge Fei and Israeli writer Amos Oz. Ge's book Wang Chun Feng (See the Spring Wind) won the best Chinese book. Scenes from Village Life, a short story collection by Oz, won the best translated work.

Travel: Guizhou launches tourism promotion at UN

The government of Guizhou province launched a tourism promotion last week at the UN headquarters in New York, showcasing its natural and cultural heritage. The event titled Fascinating Guizhou: a Heaven of Myriad Mountains aims to deepen cultural and tourism cooperation between the province and the world. Guizhou is known as a mountain kingdom. Last year, 54,600 tourists from the United States alone came to the province, up by 32 percent year-on-year.

Buzzword: Exercise bulimia

Exercise bulimia refers to compulsive behavior in which people count the calories ingested during a meal, and then tailor a workout to burn off the same number of calories. Some exercise bulimics run themselves into the ground to expend the "excess" calories they consume.
