Society: Seniors earn more than $589,000 weaving nets

A group of elderly women in Shandong province have earned more than 4 million yuan ($589,000) by making colorful rope nets. The seniors work in a family shop owned by Li Fangzhen, 28, in the village of Nanbeili. The nets are sold online. Nanbeilli is part of Lizhuang town, said to be the country's largest producer of rope nets, holding 85 percent of the domestic market.

Exhibition: Photographers capture history through lens

Works from photographers Gao Fan and Niu Weiyu are on show at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing. Born in 1922 in Zhejiang province, Gao, the former editor-in-chief of PLA Pictorial, fought in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45). Niu, from Henan province, also fought in the war in 1945. The event will run until June 18.

The daily occurrence is also an opportunity for participants to meet new friends and socialize with their neighbors. Art: Ancient ceramics from Jingdezhen shine in the capital

An exhibition featuring ceramics from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, has been unveiled at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Culture and History Museum in Beijing. The Ceramic Culture Exhibition of Jingdehzen China features 364 ancient pieces as well as hundreds of other items. The event will run until the end of August.

Buzzword: Verbicaine

Verbicaine refers to soothing words used to calm or distract a patient who is awake during a surgical procedure. Many patients are anxious about anticipated procedural pain. Supportive verbal communication, including distraction or verbicaine, can play a role in reducing anxiety and pain.
