Society: Massive 'intelligent' parking lot opens in Beijing

With a staggering 2,679 spaces, and charging just 6 yuan (90 cents) per hour, Beijing's largest "intelligent" underground parking lot is now open for business. Located near a large People's Liberation Army hospital and a major basketball stadium in the capital, the parking lot can cater not only for the parking needs of patients and medical professionals, but can ease parking congestion during big events. The parking lot is fitted with an intelligent vehicle tracking facility, advanced payment systems and can provide an automated guided vehicle robot parking service, the first of its kind in Beijing, allowing cars to be automatically parked.

Biz: 47 self-made billionaires in the world under 40

There are 47 self-made billionaires under the age of 40 in the world, according to the latest Hurun Global Rich List released last month. Their average age is about 36 and they come from eight countries, the Hurun Research Institute in Shanghai reported. Wang Tao, founder of Dajiang Innovation Technology Co, is the only Chinese selfmade billionaire in the top 10.

Culture: 67 new emojis to better express yourself in 2018

How many emojis does one really need in life? Unicode Consortium thinks you need more than just one. The nonprofit group which sets global standards for emojis announced Thursday a set of 67 emoji candidates for 2018 which include, of course, a sad poopy face. The new array of emojis for Apple, Google, Facebook and Android devices represents a wider range of items in people's everyday lives and some of our secret inner selves as well. The new emojis will be voted on during the next few months and launched in June next year.

People: Single mom increases popularity of handmade shoes

Jiang Qiuju, a single mother of two in Enshi, Hubei province, has seen her traditional handmade cloth shoes become a popular attraction. Selling for about 180 yuan ($27) per pair, Jiang said she hopes to branch out and sell them outside her hometown. Her success has motivated friends to try their hands at traditional handicrafts.

Art: Prize-winning artist displays her works in Beijing

Artist and designer Li Linlin, 25 in Beijing, was awarded the Lalique Nova Art Prize last month. Her installations and a collaborative work with Lalique, the French crystal brand, are now on show at the 2017 Art Nova 100 Opening Exhibition through Aug 15. Li received her bachelor's degree at Beijing's Central Academy of Fine Arts last year. Her works engage the audience in a semirealistic and semifictional environment.
