People: Woodcarver notches up 30 years devoted to craft

After 30 years in his craft, woodcarver Hu Wenjie's Buddhist figures reflect his dedication and skill as he lovingly toils in his workshop in Xinxiang, Henan province. Woodcarving, a traditional craft spanning more than 3,000 years, was named on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, which was approved by the State Council in 2008. Biz: Top Chinese cities for international trade

A list of the top 100 Chinese international trading cities for 2016 was released by the General Administration of Customs last month. The list looks at indicators, such as international trade competitiveness, structural advantages, efficiency, development and potential competitiveness. Coastal cities in East China have more competitive advantages. Eight out of the top 10 cities in this sector are from this area and the Pearl River Delta.

Heritage: Creative inspiration honors Old Summer Palace

A fair highlighting cultural creative products themed on the Old Summer Palace is being held in the palace in Beijing. It features more than 50 items, including furniture decoration, articles of everyday use and three-dimensional printed structures. The Old Summer Palace, also known as Yuanmingyuan, was a large estate used by Manchu royalty of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), but was burned down by Anglo-French expedition forces in 1860.

Popular TV program National Chinese Characters Contest has turned public attention to written Chinese. The contest has a Spelling Bee format with a distinct Chinese twist. Pupils are divided into different teams and try to write down every word according to its pronunciation. The show attracts huge viewing figures every Thursday night.

Travel: Tibet receives over 8.6 million tourists so far this year

More than 8.6 million tourists from home and abroad visited the Tibet autonomous region in the first half of this year, up 25 percent year-on-year. Tourism revenue during the period reached 9.3 billion yuan ($1.4 billion). Ctrip, the country's largest online travel agency, issued a list of China's top 10 summer resorts, with Tibet ranked first. Tourism experts forecast more tourists in the following months as the region will celebrate a series of events.
