Why do Chinese films fail to sell overseas?

Although some romantic comedies do well in the Chinese market, these stories are really difficult to translate over to foreign languages. Besides, China also lacks a new generation of globally bankable stars to replace the likes of Chow Yun-Fat, Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh, who made their name in Hong Kong action movies of the 1980s and 1990s before moving on to Hollywood. Today's young Chinese actors have little incentive to head west.
