Lite-On IT Corp, the world's second-largest CD drive supplier, set up shop in Beihai in the southern part of Guangxi Zhuangzu Autonomous Region on Jan 22.

Lite-On IT was established by the Lite-On Group to focus on the optical disk drive (ODD) industry. The company separated from the Lite-On Technology Opto Business Unit in March 1999, and became a listed company in Taiwan in December 2004.

As the largest CD drive supplier in China and the second-largest globally, Lite-On IT offers CD-ROM, CD-RW and DVD-ROM drives, as well as products such as Combo drives and DVD-RW drives.

According to the Beihai Municipal People's Government, Lite-On IT Corp established operations in Beihai with a total investment of $96 million and registered capital of $55 million. The project covers a total area of 40.5 hectares.

The project is expected to attract more than $170 million in investments, create $10 billion in output value and create 16,000 job opportunities before the end of 2012, Beihai officials said.
