Escoffier International Chef Association will launch a youth hope contest in China to choose winners for the Asian competition.

The contest will be held in Kunming of Yunnan province, Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan of Hubei province and Guangzhou of Guangdong province respectively in April.

The winner and runner-up of each region will be invited to participate in the national competition which will be held in Beijing in May, said Robert Fontana, chairman of Disciples Escoffier Asia.

As one of the world's most important international gastronomical associations, the association has set up a partnership with the Chinese Cuisine Association. It now has 20 million members from more than 20 countries.

"Our main purpose is to develop skills of young Chinese chefs by giving them opportunities to join the great network of Escoffier," said Fontana.

The contest is held every year with participants aged at lower than 26 and working in a Western kitchen.

Fontana said young chef candidates from eight Asian countries and regions including China, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, the Philippines as well as Hong Kong and Macao will compete at the Asia Youth Hope Contest 2010.

Eight selected top chefs of Asia will vie with each other for the title Best Chef of Asia at the Asian competition which will be held in Shanghai in May, he said.

The winner will have the opportunity to represent Asia to compete for the worldwide final in Brussels in 2011.
