Longmen Grottoes—treasure house of ancient Buddhist cave art

The Longmen Grottoes (or Longmen Caves) are located on both banks of the Yihe River, 6 kilometers south of the historic city of Luoyang, central China’s Henan province. They are known at home and abroad for their large numbers, massive scales, variety of subjects, delicate carving and profound meaning. They are an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity and prove how marvelous a place can be made by pursuit of excellence and dedicated hard work.

The legend of Palace Lanterns in Luoyang

Lanterns and coloured festoons were hung up in the palace whilst holding feasts during the Lantern Festival.

The legend of Da Yu and Yi Que

Many people have attributed the formation of Longmen (Dragon Gate) Mountain and the Yihe River to Da Yu, or Yu the Great.

Fengxiansi Cave

It is the largest cliff-niche in Longmen Grottoes. It is also the most representative work of Longmen’s carvings in Tang Dynasty.

Xiangshan Temple

Xiangshan Temple, which ranked the first among the ten temples at Longmen, is situated in the middle mountainside of the East Hill.

Baiyuan Garden

The Baiyuan Garden refers to the mausoleum of Bai Juyi, an outstanding poet of the Tang Dynasty who lived between AD 772 and AD 846.

 

The protection of the Longmen Grottoes (I)

The protection of the Longmen Grottoes has been continuous, but can be divided into three stages: protection when the grottoes were constructed, after they were constructed, and in modern times.
