BEIJING - Wang Zhizhi, a starting centre for China's Olympic basketball team, would "take responsibility" for his part in a post car-crash scuffle in Beijing over the weekend, he said in a statement carried by local media on Monday.

Wang Zhizhi

Wang, China's first NBA player and who will represent the country at the Beijing Olympics, was questioned by police on Saturday after becoming involved in a fight between his father and another driver after their cars crashed on Friday.

The driver was taken to hospital with a head injury and later joined Wang and his father at a local police station.

"My father and child were in the car, and my child was given a fright, so my father went over to them to remonstrate, and they started shoving each other," Wang said in a statement on Xinhua news agency's Web site.

"I got out of the car to try to stop them, but as a father and a son, I did act a bit impulsively. I'm willing to take responsibility for my actions," Wang said, adding that police had yet to make a final judgement.
