The reason for the removal is not known but some media have speculated that it may be related to alleged match-fixing or gambling soccer games. However, some sources said it was abrupt for such a high level official to leave his post.

61-year-old Wang was appointed as deputy director of SGAS in November 2003.

At least 21 officials, players and club managers have been arrested or detained in the past two months on suspicion of match-fixing or gambling, which is illegal in China.
